Joshua Roman is a California-based fine artist and illustrator.
His distinct colourful works have been shown in galleries around the world. His use of vibrant rainbow lines and shapes as well as playful creatures often contrast the eerie and sometimes sensual subject matter of his pieces. His portraits are unique and original while still capturing the essence of the subject.
What stands out for you as one of your favourite career highlights so far? Artistically I’m more concerned with how I have improved from piece to piece rather than actual “career” Improvements.
What are you currently working on? Currently i am working on several pieces for a few up coming shows.
How’d you get started as an artist? I’ve been drawing since before I can remember and luckily have never really stopped.
Who or what influences your art? Artists that inspired me early on were, Chuck Close, Salvador Dali, Norman Rockwell, Bob Ross, Now I have way too many artists that i admire to list, but I try and do my own thing and use them as inspiration to get better rather than to copy anyone’s style.
What is your creative process like? I usually start with a concept I want to portray then start mapping out the piece, After the initial layout I tweak and tweak and tweak… during the sketching process.Once im finally set on the drawing I work on the piece non stop Until the piece is finished, Its very hard for me to pause a piece and walk away then come back to it months later.
How do you feel our Art + Brewing initiative can benefit emerging artists? I think its a great way to get exposure for you art. One of the hardest things as an artist is getting a large audience to see your work.
