Panel Revealed

Our fifth Series call for art & music is now closed, and we are more than pumped to introduce you to this round’s curator panel. These eight esteemed individuals will come together from different areas of the art, music, beer, media, culture and design realms to help hand-pick this limited-edition set of labels. As the basis of our brewery is built on creativity, we are thrilled to be working with such talents who will be lending their respective expertise to choose the Series Five artistic beer labels that will stimulate, delight and inspire our drinkers.

Co-founders Bob Russell and Matt Johnston will also help curate Series Five on behalf of Collective Arts Brewing, lending a voice for the team who come from all walks of the beer, art and creative sectors.

Finally, we want to send a huge, huge THANK YOU to all of you who took the time to submit! We have received over 1400 submissions this round, which is incredible. Looking forward to pouring through all of the brilliance that has come through.

Without further ado, our Series Five Curators:


My Young is a musician and graphic designer based out of Seattle, Washington. He is currently the lead vocalist and keyboardist for the new wave group, Jupe Jupe. Young grew up moving between Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas, and became infatuated with synthesizers as a young teenager. After completing his studies at the University of Texas at Austin, he moved to the Pacific Northwest to continue his love for electronic pop music, and start a career in design and web development.

Andrew Hunter is an accomplished curator, artist, writer and educator. He is the Fredrik S. Eaton Curator, Canadian Art, at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Hunter has held curatorial positions at the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Kamloops Art Gallery, the University of Waterloo, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and Charlottetown’s Confederation Centre Art Gallery. With Lisa Hirmer, he co-founded DodoLab, an international program of community collaboration and interdisciplinary creative research. He has lectured on curatorial practice in Canada, the United States, England, China and Croatia. Hunter most recently curated the AGO’s Alex Colville exhibition and oversaw the reinstallation of the Canadian galleries featuring major works by indigenous artists.

WIA (aka whatisadam) is a Canadian street artist based in Montreal, Quebec. Working with poster art, painting & sculpture, his artwork uses vintage comic pop-art to highlight Canadian & Quebecois stereotypes, while exploring layers of graffiti & typography. His murals & street art can be found in Montreal, Paris, New York, Winnipeg, and other parts of the world. His signature attire is a hand-painted goalie mask & plaid jacket.

Ben Johnson is a freelance writer who has written about beer, politics, and the places where the two intertwine for publications like Toronto Life, Post City, and Torontoist. He is the beer writer for Toronto lifestyle website blogTO, and he is the publisher of the popular website Ben’s Beer Blog. Kate Bernot is the associate editor at DRAFT Magazine, America’s largest beer magazine, which covers beer trends, news and travel. She’s written about beer for DRAFT, as well as previously for Chicago Tribune, RedEye and Food Fanatics. This summer, she’s in search of the perfect kolsch. 2014 brought a new chapter in the life of music and brand pioneer, Alan Miller. After over a decade of running FILTER Creative Group and FILTER Magazine, Miller launched a brand new agency (COLLiDE), editorial platform (CULTURE COLLIDE), and an expanded festival line up for Culture Collide in NY and SF. The 6th Annual Culture Collide Festival will return to Los Angeles in October 2015, bringing three days of incredible music, drinks, panels, and more to Echo Park. As one of the most buzzed about festivals of the fall season, Culture Collide also expanded to San Francisco and New York in 2014. Andrew is a photographer and creative consultant, and started the alternative artspace TheBlackCat in a small storefront on Dundas West in May of 2013. The gallery has hosted a wide range of group shows and solo shows by local photographers and artists in all mediums. The goal has always been to connect creative people and create inclusive experiences through the range of programming.

As a photographer, Andrew volunteers his time within the wider creative community alongside the CreativeMornings team, and makes a living as a photographer where he has shot everything from arts and culture, editorial, politicians and more commercial work.

Neha Sharma built her career in the world of music television. Her tenure at MTV Canada and MuchMusic as head of Talent & Artist Relations took her on an epic musical journey from playing Scrabble with the Beastie Boys to receiving kisses from One Direction… and everything in between. Next was a short programming stint at Soho House Toronto where she could finally legitimize her love for music and booze. Neha has recently joined the freelance world, currently as Supervising Producer at FREE Agency, but still continues to be a full-time beer drinker. Follow her on Instagram @sharmstagram
