Meet Shawn.

Hello, my name is Shawn Nichols. I am a photographer and a Pacific Northwest native. I grew up in the area, but moved away for a decade. When I returned I felt like a visitor exploring another planet. My passion is capturing the people and places of the Pacific Northwest in their natural state; otherworldly, beautiful, eccentric.

How’d you get started as an artist? To change my outlook on life, and as a challenge to myself, I began searching for one beautiful thing each day to be thankful for and photograph it. In the years that have passed photography has become a mainstay in my life, as both a source of inspiration, and creativity.

What is your creative process like? I will often see an image in my mind while sleeping or lost in thought listening to music. If I see the same vision repeatedly, I am compelled to create it.

Who or what influences your art? Music provides a wellspring of inspiration, most of my images are titled after the songs or lyrics that inspired them. Whether shooting on location or in-studio music serves as both a compass point and companion in my creative process.

What stands out for you as one of your favourite career highlights so far? I was recently asked to create a video for the band Creeper Lagoon. As a fan of their work, it was an honour to be selected to create a piece by an artist whose work has influenced me directly.

What are you currently working on? For the last four years, I have been working on a street photography book based out of Seattle. The Pacific Northwest is full of otherworldly beauty, it feels like walking through a waking dream. More recently, I have been working to incorporate surrealist touches into my images to compliment its ethereal atmosphere.

How do you feel our Art + Brewing initiative can benefit emerging artists? I feel this wonderful opportunity for creatives in general, to have their voice heard in a new, unique and interactive format. All art is created out of time and intention, whether it is craft beer, photography, or music. The individual that can appreciate the details and craftsmanship of a Sour Pumpkin Saison can also appreciate the art detail in its packaging.
