About the Artist
Kayla Marok loves all things strange and gross.
How did you get started as an artist?
My dad is an artist and he gave me a bunch of pencils and paint when I was a kid. I love art but I wonder if it’s because it’s one of the only things I know how to do. And so I pursued it. If I wasn’t given supplies when I was a child would I still be making art? Guess I’ll never know! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
How would you describe your style?
Always changing but always kind of the same. Like me.
What are some career highlights?
Every time someone comes up to me and tells me how a certain piece makes them feel or why they like it or don’t like it. It’s interesting. Sometimes I feel like other people get my art more than I do and I like hearing about it.
Who or what influences your work?
Everything and everyone. The food I eat, how much I’m sleeping, how anxious I’m feeling. Talking to other people (not just artists) about their lives and routines. Seeing life from a different perspective is the the biggest inspiration.
What are you working on right now?
Many little things. A couple of bigger things. You can find them on my Instagram page. @kaylamarok
What is your creative process like?
I'll start by staring at nothing for a little while and check in with myself. Am I pissed off? Depressed? Stoked? Sometimes I'll squint my eyes and look at the shape of an object, or a stain or something and start a drawing based on that. I also like to use 'random word generators' online.
Art supplies are very expensive so I work with cheap materials and sometimes the challenge of working with a limited palette or supplies results in the best pieces. For me anyway.
