About the Artist
Kate O'Hara is a freelance illustrator currently based in Reno, Nevada. She received a BFA in Illustration from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, in 2014. Her work combines intricate nature drawings with decorative hand-lettering and rich colour schemes. When she's not illustrating she's usually outside exploring with her dog Ned.
"My mother is a graphic designer, and my father worked in printing, so I grew up spending a lot of time watching them work in their studios. They always pushed me to be creative. As I grew older, I realized I wanted to pursue a career in art. My art school professors inspired me to go into illustration by showing me that it’s possible to have a career creating art in my own style while still working with clients."
Kate creates nature-inspired illustrations that draw people in through their nostalgic mood and intricate detail. Her work is created by combining coloured pencil drawings with digital colouring. She has worked for a variety of clients such as Cirque Du Soleil, Scholastic, Paramount Pictures, Hasbro Toys and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
"I’ve always been drawn to scientific illustration and work from artists like John James Audubon and Ernst Haeckel. I love their compositions and how they breathed life into their illustrations of animals. Like them, my work is highly influenced by nature. I spend a lot of time hiking and camping around Reno and Tahoe, taking pictures of wildlife. I also love making art that is dark and disturbingly beautiful. My personal work often involves themes of death, regeneration and symbiotic relationships, and I try to incorporate these into my client work whenever possible."
How do you feel our Art + Brewing initiative can benefit emerging artists?
Collective Art's cans are a great way to showcase emerging artist's work. They reach a much broader audience than often isn't exposed to this kind of artwork. I think it's a great symbiotic relationship!
Find her work on our Series 5 labels, and Series 9 labels coming out this May!
Kate is currently available for new projects, so if you're interested in working with her, or would just like to talk about art, get in touch! email@example.com
