About the Artist
Natalie Very B. is a published Polish-Canadian illustrator and designer. Having grown up in a country with a strong patriarchal regime and an obvious system of inequality, she finds solace in painting ethereal shapes of female figures and the stories that they tell. Her detailed paintings reveal many Slavic folklore influences, while myths and legends are a constant source of inspiration whenever she creates a new body of work.
As an immigrant artist she often explores the concept of “home”, and the sense of wistful longing and nostalgia that it brings out in her work. Her childhood experience became a strong incentive for her to make illustrations that depict women as beautiful, empowered, and strong. As a result, her current work is devoted to the investigation of whimsical shapes of feminism in today’s world.
I am currently working on organizing a mental health awareness project where I'll be offering free art workshops to the public. I think that art and mental health are uniquely bound together. It's a stepping stone in my career as a future art therapist.
Who or what influences your art?
Witchcraft, spirituality, nature, the Moon, Slavic folktales, powerful women.
What is your creative process like?
I often "see" the final painting before it happens. Some images come to me in a dream state, or right before I fall asleep. I mostly use ink and gouache to create my artwork, however being a perfectionist, digital technology serves as a crucial step in the finishing process.
