Lead Brewer, Full-time, Hamilton ON

The Lead Brewer is responsible for assisting in fulfilling the Brewing schedule and managing the flow of product to packaging. The Lead Brewer reports to the Production Manager.

Typical shift: 5 8-hour shifts a week (7AM-3PM, 3PM-11PM, 11PM-7AM) , on a shift rotation every two weeks.

A typical day as a Lead Brewer includes:

  • Being responsible for the efficiency of production, quality of the product being produced, and the safety of the Brewing and Production staff
  • Operation of an industrial centrifuge to remove solids from the beer
  • CIP of large (100hL+) vessels using a semi-automated CIP system
  • Utilize Orchestrated Beer inventory control software.
  • Assisting on, or taking over,  brewing and cellaring tasks as needed, including:
    • Dry Hopping
    • Yeast Harvesting
    • Fermenter CIPs
    • Operation of 60hL Brewhouse
  • Training and continually assist hitting goals for Brewing Staff and assist Packaging staff, with a focus on improving safety, reducing cost, heightening output, and improving quality
  • Develop, maintain and nurture a positive work environment
  • Report quality control issues to Production Manager and Quality Control Manager
  • Implement and monitor initiatives for continuous production and quality improvement in safety, efficiency, product development, process, and profitability
  • Ensure adherence to Health and Safety standards of the facility, equipment, and employees

We’re looking for candidates who have/are:

  • High school or equivalent, College Diploma or Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Brewing specific post-secondary education is an asset
  • 2-4 years of professional brewery experience
  • Supervision experience within a brewery is an asset
  • Ability to effectively lead and motivate people
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and problem-solve effectively and efficiently
  • Great verbal and written communication skills
  • Detail-oriented and able to multitask and prioritize situations that require immediate attention
  • Knowledge of materials and equipment used within beer production
  • Able to work under pressure and deadlines
  • Accountable for results
  • Ability to effectively problem solve, overcome production-related obstacles
  • Display a strong sense of urgency in all areas of the role
  • Ensure adherence to Health and Safety regulations and Company standards by all staff
  • Assist with training of new employees to company standards and operational activities
  • Promote and increase inter-departmental communication
  • Promote and role model positive feedback and constructive forms of identifying opportunities for improvement through all levels of the company
  • Aid in fostering an environment of continuous improvement
  • Develop, maintain and nurture a positive work environment

Physical requirements:

  • Physically demanding
  • Carrying and lifting heavy items, transferring and lifting or pushing items, working in awkward positions, operating heavy equipment, or holding your body in one position for a prolonged period
  • Ability to lift 20kgs repetitively throughout a shift
  • Standing for long periods of time in a warehouse environment
